Acoustic Consultancy
Order CD

In the past we have offered a full consultancy, design and construction business in acoustics and soundproofing.  With another company we completed the design and build of large studio complexes in various colleges and small private studios throughout the country.

However due to the serious illness of our main consultant, we are unable to offer a full service at the moment.  Hopefully our consultant’s health will improve in the near future and we can offer these facilities once again.

We are still able to offer partial advice on studio design and build either by visiting your premises and offering general advice and idea, but, unfortunately, not any specific design as yet.

We do also offer a “Soundproofing and Acoustics” CD-ROM, which gives details on ideas and areas on soundproofing, acoustics, ideal for D.I.Y. or even as an aid on college courses.

Chapters on this CD-ROM include the following:

Chapter 1 - Physics and Maths

When we are talking about sound proofing, acoustics and noise control there really is no getting away from the science side of things. We have no choice but to cover it as there are some quite complex calculations to be made if you decide to treat your room yourself.

Chapter 1a - What Is Sound? - What is noise and sound, including the inverse square law and impact and airborne sound.

Chapter 1b - Ears and How We Hear - Structure of our hearing system which includes the outer, inner and middle ear. Spatial hearing, spectral composition, hearing damage and recommended listening levels.

Chapter 1c - Standing Waves - Room modes and how they appear.

Chapter 1d - Reverberation - What is reverberation? How it occurs. Formulae to calculate the reverberation time of rooms.

Chapter 1e - Sound Reduction Index (SRI) - What is SRI? Formulae to calculate the sound transmission coefficient. Descriptions of the Mass law, coincidence and resonance.

Chapter 1f - Absorption Coefficients - Details of the formulae used to calculate the amount of sound absorption you can achieve with different materials.

Chapter 2 – Soundproofing

This section deals with the problems and solutions of noise, including noise escaping and noise entering your studio.

Chapter 2a - Escaping Noise - This section covers how noise escapes.

Chapter 2b - Practical Treatment - Ideas for reducing any unwanted noise in the studio / control room.

Chapter 2c - Windows & Doors - How to upgrade your existing windows and doors, including details of control room windows, patio doors and sound lock corridors.

Chapter 2d - Walls, Floors and Ceilings Introduction - Most likely source of your unwanted noise problems.

Chapter 2e - Floors & Ceilings - The best way to treat your floors and ceilings. Descriptions include floating floors, isolation mounts, suspended ceilings, compression and expansion ceilings.

Chapter 2f - Wall Designs - What is the best type of treatment for walls? Details of building studded walls, double studded walls and upgrading your existing walls.

Chapter 2g - Room within a Room - Details the best ways to construct a room within a room.

Chapter 2h - Other Noise Cures - Simple ideas to try and reduce the amount of environmental noise entering your studio.

Chapter 2i - Sound and Sound Reduction Index (SRI) - What is SRI? Formulae to calculate the sound transmission coefficient. Descriptions of the Mass law, coincidence and resonance.

Chapter 2j - Absorbent Materials - Details of the different types of sound absorbers that can be used to acoustically treat your studio / control room.

Chapter 2k - Absorption Coefficients - Details of the formulae used to calculate the amount of sound absorption you can achieve with different materials.

Chapter 3 - Acoustics

The aim of this chapter is to get your room sounding as good as it possibly can. We cover designing and building rooms as well as upgrading the rooms you already have.

Chapter 3a - Absorbent Materials - This section details the different types of sound absorbers that can be used to acoustically treat your studio / control room.

Chapter 3b - Absorption Coefficients - Details of the formulae used to calculate the amount of sound absorption you can achieve with different materials.

Chapter 3c - Reverberation - What is reverberation? How to control reverberation. Formulae to help you calculate the reverberation time of rooms.

Chapter 3d - Sound Modelling - How does sound behave? Includes descriptions of reflection, refraction and diffraction, room modes and Bolt's Ratios.

Chapter 3e - Sound and Sound Reduction Index (SRI) - What is SRI? Formulae to calculate the sound transmission coefficient. Descriptions of the Mass law, coincidence and resonance.

Chapter 4 - Noise Control

It is very unlikely that you will not encounter some form of noise, it may be something as simple as traffic going past your studio or it could be your air conditioning unit. In this section we deal with the reduction or elimination of varying types of noises that you will encounter in the studio environment.

Chapter 4a - What Is Noise? - Description of what noise is and how it is made up.

Chapter 4b - Equipment Noise - Noise generated by studio equipment and how can it be controlled.

Chapter 4c - HVAC Noise - How to control noise generated by your heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit.

Chapter 5 - Wiring and Equipment

In this section we describe various types of cable and connectors and their correct usage, microphone polar patterns and maintenance.

Chapter 5a - Mains Supply - How your house is wired and what problems it may cause when you are trying to work in your studio.

Chapter 5b - Audio Cable and Connectors - Types of cable and connectors and how they can be wired.

Chapter 5c - Maintenance - Check your plugs and general maintenance of equipment.

Chapter 5d - Microphones - Polar patterns of microphones, showing various pick up patterns.

Chapter 6 – Warnings

The aim of this section is to bring to your attention a few points that are VERY important whilst you are building or upgrading your studio, and also whilst working within your studio.
